The Rundown: The cat is out of the bag as the Man of Steel makes an announcement that will change his world forever.
Perry White has called a press conference at the Daily Planet and everyone is there because it could potentially be explosive news. When Superman descends from the heavens and takes the mic, his next announcement will change everything for the strange being from another planet.
As both friend and foe alike watches from wherever they gather, Superman reveals to the world that he is actually Clark Kent. It’s a reveal that is made with a lot of thought behind it and even a conversation with Adam Strange. Unfortunately, people who love and support Superman aren’t the only ones watching.
The Story: Admittedly, I was concerned about how Bendis would treat this subject and how this particular reveal would be handled. Fortunately, the moment and the issue are written and handled with care, reverence and respect for both the severity of the moment and the history of the character. I actually got a little emotional and I love the mixture of gravitas and humor Bendis adds to the issue. What makes it even better is that friend and foe alike are left to process what they’ve just witnessed and what it means going forward. Brilliant storytelling in this issue.
The Art: Ivan Reis delivers some beautiful and compelling moments throughout this issue and everything looks amazingly detailed. There are so many visual things to love in this issue, especially the quiet moments. Reis conveys so much emotion in moments with no dialogue and the moment Clark tells Perry is perfectly captured visually with no dialogue at all. It’s a powerful moment beautifully captured.
