The Rundown: Calvin seeks help with his magical abilities and Doyle discovers a dark future.
The students take a trip into a possible future to witness the X-Men take on a sentinel and know the importance of not messing with time. As the students work on their own time hops, Doyle finds himself in an unfamiliar future where he notices some familiar faces. At the same time, Calvin is called into a meeting with Zelda regarding his falling behind in his classes. Zelda decides to give him something that might help him find his confidence in his own abilities.
In the future, Doyle sees an Emily he doesn’t recognize. He follows the group into the ruins of the Academy to see Emily give a speech to those gathered. A speech that is interrupted by his older self and his own forces preparing to confront his former friend. As he watches the two groups engage in battle, he is ripped back into the present. After Calvin decides to visit a dark presence for help, Doyle makes a decision about his future.
The Story: Young crafts an interesting story in this issue. The characters continue to be dynamic and engaging. Doyle’s story is both poignant and sad and seeing him navigate a possible future with himself in opposition to his friends is a great representation of his worst fear. A lot of the angst in Calvin’s story didn’t connect with me as a reader, but his story does effectively line up the student’s next conflict.
The Art: Ramos delivers some fantastic art in the issue. I loved the Age of Apocalypse scenes in the beginning and the art is vibrant and energetic throughout the issue.
