The Rundown: Emily confronts a dark creature beneath Strange’s home and Calvin is desperate to regain his magic.
The students are giving presentations on the places that they are from and Shaylee has an awkward moment with the Ogre Mage and his tales of the murder flowers that feed on sadness. At the end of the presentations, Calvin is asked to stay behind to talk about his lack of presentation and in the aftermath, Iric decides that what Calvin needs is some time in town and some fun. Emily is worried about Calvin and what the dark connection to Doctor Strange means for the young man. As everyone leaves campus to have fun, Emily decides to pay a visit to someone beneath the campus grounds.
She decides to confront the thing in the cellar and tell him everything she knows about him including some hard truths he doesn’t want to face about himself. She also tells him something surprising. At the same time, her fellow students are investigating a cemetery for fun when they learn the truth about Zoe and her connection to a powerful magical lineage. Her story also gives Calvin an idea that will bring him closer to some dark magic.
The Story: Young creates another interesting story that explores the history of one of the characters. Its parallels to what Calvin is dealing with and how his desperation will lead to more trouble are woven well into the plot. Emily’s story is also well done and its evolution took some interesting and unexpected turns. An interesting and engaging story that will lead to some darker things to come.
The Art: Ramos delivers some beautifully detailed art throughout the issue. Each page and panel is filled with brilliant and vibrant visual moments.
