The Rundown: The history of Stillwater after the event is unveiled and a mother makes a desperate choice to give her son a future.

Laura is preparing to leave her house with her infant son Tommy when Laura discovers something that everyone in town will soon enough, she heals almost instantly and cannot die. When the rest of the town discovers this fact, they turn to their elected officials for guidance and that’s when the Judge begins his takeover of the situation in order to protect the town and its people from being turned into lab animals.

As the years go on, Laura and the others realize the dark side of immortality, especially in Tommy. With the mind of a five year old in the body of a baby, Laura wonders what kind of future her child will have in the town. After enlisting the help of the sympathetic sheriff, Laura comes up with a plan to save her baby from the future she sees for him in Stillwater. Unfortunately, the Judge has men loyal to him and he decides to show the sheriff just how powerful he has become.

The Story: Zdarsky gives the reader a peak into the events that shaped the current story with a tale that is filled with drama and intriguing characters. We get a sense of the power dynamics at play in Stillwater and just how far the Judge will go to keep his power. It is a great story that has some emotionally powerful moments for Laura and ramifications that have yet to be revealed. All of the intrigue and mysteries being laid out make me interested in seeing where the story goes next and everything up to this point continues to be engaging.

The Art: Perez brings some awesome imagery to this issue. There are some great moments throughout and an emphasis on character. The art is both emotional and personal with scenes that emphasize emotion.
