Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Disney+
Season 1, Episode 5
Rampage
Official Description – The Batch strike a deal to take on a mission.
The Batch goes to Ord Mantell to investigate the bounty hunter tracking Omega. They meet with a previous Jedi informant named Cid, who offers to obtain the needed information in exchange for their services. Omega’s intuition proves surprisingly useful in this endeavor, and her value to the team is noted.
The Batch agree to certain terms. They then travel to the other side of the planet for a rescue mission. However, the adults are soon subdued by Zygerrian slavers. Omega must then make a dangerous decision to help the team. This leads to a fun and exciting battle scene. Meanwhile, Cid communicates with some unexpected colleagues. Later, The Batch has an interesting encounter when they return to the informant’s location. They then obtain a surprising offer.
I have been pleasantly surprised at the how the tone of this animation has remained serious and engaging. The stakes are always high, and so far, there has not been an episode designed only for very young audiences.
I have to mention, there is a pretty interesting backstory to a character from Return of the Jedi that fans will be sure to recognize. And I am glad that Dave Filoni and team continue to connect the past and present Star Wars iterations into one cohesive universe. These cameos are not just fan service, they remind us of how small the degrees of separation are for any individual at any given moment.
I also love how the series adds in little clues for the viewer to ponder. For instance, Wrecker’s continued mention of an injury peaks my curiosity. Although his actions are subtle, the implication of a greater narrative is very promising. As always, I look forward to the next chapter in this saga.
