Imperial forces attempt to draw Obi-Wan out.
The episode starts with a great, and perfectly brief, flashback between Obi-Wan and Anakin before transitioning back to Vader waiting on the arrival of Reva. After giving her what she wants, they proceed to follow the tracking signal to where Obi-Wan and the others are hiding. The opening has the perfect mixture of nostalgia and ominous tension.
Obi-Wan returns to Jabeen with Leia and we see the return of a familiar face. The mood gets decidedly darker when Vader enacts the next part of his plan. A plan that Obi-Wan predicts and that we see through another flashback. This allows the viewer to see Obi-Wan the military leader as he prepares the refugees for the Imperial arrival. Things get even tenser when the Empire arrives and Reva prepares her troops.
We also get to see the evolution of Obi-Wan and Leia’s relationship when she steps up to help and Obi-Wan trusts her as well as showing that trust in his actions. Obi-Wan decides to buy some time by speaking to Reva. We finally get to see what happened to Reva in the Jedi Temple. We also learn what Reva really wants as the action intensifies.
The stakes get raised for everyone and there are really intense consequences that lead to Obi-Wan making a bold decision. One that will have serious repercussions for everyone while Leia continues to work to free the ship and confront her own heroic moment. There’s also an intense Vader moment that is perfectly paralleled with the flashbacks. A moment that will lead to an awesome fight that showcases Vader’s power.
Episode V is an intense action packed and thrilling ride that showcases some of the best of Star Wars both in character development and story. It brilliantly uses flashbacks to parallel the relationship between these characters and delivers an experience that fans will definitely enjoy while also showcasing the real danger Obi-Wan and the people who ally with him face.
