The next entry into the Star Wars universe might begin with a step back.
According to Buzzfeed, Lucasfilm is developing a film based on the beloved 2003 video game Knights of the Old Republic.
Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) is currently writing the film which will highlight the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith 4000 years before the events of Star Wars A New Hope. According to Wikipedia (for those unfamiliar):
The story of Knights of the Old Republic takes place almost 4000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, where Darth Malak, a Dark Lord of the Sith, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. The player character, as a Jedi, must venture to different planets in the galaxy in order to defeat Malak. Players choose from three character classes and customize their characters at the beginning of the game, and engage in round-based combat against enemies. Through interacting with other characters and making plot decisions, the alignment system will determine whether the player’s character aligns with the light or dark side of the Force.
It’s going to be an ambitious undertaking for Lucasfilm to dive into the extended universe that they removed from canon before The Force Awakens, but the announcement that they will be taking on this beloved property is an interesting and intriguing development.
