The Rundown: Surrounded by a Tholian Web, Captain Kirk will make the ultimate sacrifice to free his ship.
With the Tholians surrounding them and preparing for attack, Spock is in command of the Enterprise against the wishes of Dr. McCoy. After the mind meld with the young Tholian known as Bright Eyes, both beings are experiencing different emotional states. This is making things more difficult as Kirk, Sulu and Ayal attempt to detonate the alien’s ship in order to break the web.
Kirk order Sulu to take Ayal and go back to the ship and he will trigger the explosion. Unfortunately, Kirk’s suit is damaged and he is fading fast. Bright Eyes breaks through the hull to rescue the Captain before the alien ship explodes, but it might be too late for everyone.
The Story: Lanzing and Kelly deliver a satisfying continuation of this story that is filled with action and tension. There is great dialogue throughout and the banter between Spock and McCoy is classic. There are some interesting and cool surprises throughout, but the final reveal at the end was what got my attention the most. I’m not going to spoil it, but it is definitely going to surprise and delight fans of the original series.
The Art: Stephen Thompson delivers some amazing art in this issue. The characters look great and the action is fantastic. I love the look and feel and of this issue and the final scene reveal was laid out perfectly for maximum effect.
