The Rundown: Odo and the Federation investigator get off to a rocky start and a break in the case may have ties to the occupation of Bajor.
Federation investigator Retlaw has a history with Dominion and puts his cards on the table with Odo right away. Having barely escaped the invasion of Betazed, Retlaw is reticent to work with the changeling and their first interactions are tense. Especially when Retlaw’s request to re-interview the witnesses causes Odo to bring him to Quark knowing Betazoids can’t read Ferengi minds.
Two more victims are found with no surveillance of the area and Retlaw manages to get some information from the Naussicans in holding. What he discovers will lead both investigators to a Starfleet officer and a Bajoran spiritual leader. It will also put a target on their backs.
The Story: Scott and David Tipton do an excellent job of not only moving this story forward and expanding it in new directions, but also taking Trek fans to a part of the Dominion War that was only hinted at in the series. The story is immersive and well told. The characters are interesting and the dialogue is amazing. I can’t wait to see where this story goes next.
The Art: I continue to be impressed with the gritty, noir style of Greg Scott’s art. The panels and camera angles are reminiscent of classic detective stories and are perfect for the tone of this series.
