St. Mercy #3
Image Comics
Written by John Zuur Platten
Art by Atilio Rojo
Letters by Troy Peteri
The Rundown: Mercy and her father are confronted by gangsters as the Sheriff rushes to their rescue.
In the distant past, more of Toctollissica’s story is uncovered as the events of her sacrifice day are explored. In the present, Frank Danton and his crew approach Mercy and Neto. After a series of threats, Mercy gives Danton valuable information. Afterwards, a deadly altercation occurs. Later, the Sheriff arrives and finds something startling. He then goes after the gang and has a face off with Danton. Finally, Mercy experiences something unusual.
The Story: Platten crafts a stunning penultimate episode that dares to challenge typical storytelling. I was very surprised at the way certain events played out, as well as the level of violent language used. However, I felt Platten was very brave in choosing to portray a realistic version of the circumstances. I am now intrigued by the supernatural element of the Incan story. Although, I would have been satisfied with Mercy’s story alone, Toctollissica has become the subject of my attention, and I am looking forward to finding out how her plot line will end.
The Art: Rojo has crafted a beautifully illustrated edition filled with detailed drawings and bold coloring. The action sequences are impressive and realistic looking. And the special attention given to character expression and form create an immersive environment that draws you further into the story.
