The Rundown: Confronted by both a deadly creature and a grieving brother, Erica’s mission to kill the creature plaguing the town will have some disastrous consequences.
In the cave the creature has made its home, Erica prepares to fight for her life and the lives of the children still left in the town. As the creature gets closer, Erica’s job gets complicated by Tommy leveling a pistol at her. At the same time, James is goaded into trying to help by Erica’s stuffed companion and his help will end is possible disaster for everyone.
In a bid to save his life, Erica shows Tommy everything he can’t see including the monster coming for them. As Erica goes to fight, Tommy is tasked with rescuing James and an unknown survivor while still grieving the loss of his sister. In the aftermath, Erica discovers that the creature she’s been hunting has been busier than she thought and her mission might just be getting started.
The Story: James Tynion IV ratchets up the intensity in this issue. The tension in the opening panels is palpable and the reader is brought inside the standoff. The dialogue and pace of the story feed into the uncertainty of every moment and that uncertainty makes the issue more entertaining. Even when things take a tragic turn, Tynion IV manages to keep the tension going while also making us care about these characters and what happens to them. With the revelation at the end of this issue, I am intrigued to see not only more of what we were shown, but what it means for the story going forward.
The Art: Dell’edera crafts a wonderful world for these characters and the art reflects both the tone of the story, but the feel of the moment. The fact that most of the story takes place in a cave is brought to claustrophobic clarity by Dell’edera and the brilliant use of shadows.
