The Rundown: Erica continues to deal with the trauma of her recent loss as she prepares for a dangerous new life.
Erica waits in the House of Slaughter with the trapped creature growling at her side. After being confronted by Aaron, she lashes out just in time for Jessica to catch her. Erica is told that she will begin her initiation the next day and she is brought to Jessica’s private rooms to prepare for tomorrow. After being told that the trial she is about to face will be dangerous, Erica is introduced to the head of her house before being sent to bed.
As Jessica goes out to drink and contemplate the dangerous decision she has made, Erica dreams of the dark moment that changed her life forever. She awakens to find a familiar face waiting for her trying to be kind. Something she will need to hold onto as she prepares for her dangerous test in the morning.
The Story: James Tynion IV is a master at world building and taking the reader back to the beginning of a dynamic character like Erica is a bold and rewarding choice. The plot is deeply engaging and you get a real sense of the resilience and determination of the character as well as the personalities of the other members of the Order. There is a lot of rich story to tell and Tynion IV does a great job of making you want to dive in deeper.
The Art: Dell’Edera delivers some beautiful and immersive art in this issue. There are so many great visual moments and the art perfectly captures the mood and tone of the story.
