After meeting his supposed fate at the end of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, it was pretty well established that you can’t keep a good Dathomirian down and the character returned in season 3 of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars. His origins are established in that season and the next two seasons of the series build on that story by having him take revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as clash with the Empire itself.

Maul goes on to create a criminal empire with his brother Savage Opress and they manage to recruit the Black Sun and Pyke crime families along with minions of Jabba the Hutt. He continues to build his empire, working behind the scenes on different worlds while he plots his revenge against both the Jedi and the Sith. In the series Rebels, Maul has a final confrontation with Obi-Wan on Tatooine.

Maul’s presence in Solo means that he is still commanding his Crimson Dawn crime syndicate and Qi’ra informs the former Sith that her boss Dryden Vos was killed by Tobias Beckett and Qi’ra leaves Han Solo and is now working directly for Maul. This leaves open the possibility of both characters returning for a possible sequel to Solo in the future.

Trivia: Ray Park, who played the character in Episode I, returns for Solo: A Star Wars Story with Sam Witwer providing his voice. Witwer voiced the character in Clone Wars and Rebels.
