The long gestating third big screen adventure of Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes is finally getting some traction with the news that a director has been named to take over the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher is in talks to take on the directing duties of the next Sherlock Holmes film ten years after the last film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hit theaters.
Robert Downey Jr is expected to return as the title detective with Jude Law returning as friend and partner John Watson. Guy Ritchie directed the first two Sherlock Holmes adventures. Fletcher was brought in to complete the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after director Bryan Singer was take off the project. In addition to the Elton John biopic Rocketman, Fletcher recently directed the sports drama Eddie the Eagle.
The third Sherlock Holmes is expected to be released December 22, 2021 so filming should begin soon.
