Conan the barbarian will prove to be troublesome cargo for a crew of pirates in this issue.
Conan is the lone survivor of a battle at sea and has braved both death and the creatures of the deep to stay alive. Barely clinging to life, the crew of a passing ship pick up the Cimmerian and clap him in irons to secure him as he will bring them coin as a slave to be sold. Another slave named Suty agrees to nurse the Cimmerian back to health for a price and Conan fights for his life.
When the barbarian awakens, he immediately works to escape from bondage, dragging a reluctant Suty with him. When he finally decides to see the Captain of the ship, Conan makes both a supernatural discovery and the potential for new adventure.
Gerry Duggan captures the classic tone and feel of the character perfectly. The high adventure and defiant attitude of Robert Howard’s Cimmerian warrior are perfectly captured in the pace and dialogue. Conan is a defiant badass and every page pushes the thrilling story forward with the promise of action and thrills. Duggan delivers a great story in this issue and opens the door for exciting adventures to come. I can’t wait to see what happens next for the character.
Ron Garney’s art is splendid. There is so much rich and beautiful detail in the panels and the characters look amazing.
