With the prevailing rumors being that the next Avengers movie will be titled Annihilation and that many of the stars from the previous films including Chris Evans will have their big screen swan songs in it, fans are wondering what happens next for the heroes of the Marvel universe after Avengers 4 bows.
It’s been reported on That Hashtag Show as well as IGN that Marvel Studios commissioned a script based on the Dark Avengers created by Brian Michael Bendis. The original Dark Avengers appeared in 2009 and focused on Norman Osborn as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. During his reign, Osborn rebranded the spy agency as H.A.M.M.E.R. and used his position and power to create a new team of Avengers.
Osborn’s Dark Avengers was populated with super villains disguised as heroes and the roster included Mac Gargan (Scorpion and Venom at the time) as Spider-Man, Moonstone as Ms. Marvel, Logan’s son Daken as Wolverine and Osborn himself as Iron Patriot.
Although this script is still a rumor, the seeds of this storyline have been planted already in the MCU.
Iron Patriot
The Iron Patriot armor already exists in the MCU. Created by the government as an alternative to the unsanctioned actions of Iron Man, the Iron Patriot was loyal to the interests of the United States. Even after the events of Iron Man 3, the armor itself was not destroyed so it should still be in government custody.
Fall of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The fall of the premiere spy agency in the MCU continues to leave a vacuum that, despite the resurgence on TV, could mean the creation of and escalation of the agency. In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode “The Hub” the moniker is clearly seen indicating that the prototype already exists.
The Sokovia Accords
What would stop a government run by people like Thunderbolt Ross from creating their own Avenger team? Considering the rogue nature of Steve Rogers’ team and how they failed to prevent the Thanos snap, Ross could be just the person to commission a new Avengers team loyal to the government that adheres to the Accords. He also doesn’t seem the type to be that discriminating about who he lets on the team.
Zemo
There might not be a Norman Osborn in the MCU yet, but there is someone who could definitely fill the role of team leader of the Dark Avengers. If Ross is looking to create his own team that is loyal to him and in opposition to the Avengers, why not bring in someone who was able to manipulate everyone especially Captain America and Iron Man into trying to kill each other? Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo is still alive in the MCU and a Dark Avengers film would be the perfect opportunity to bring back the character.
