The Rundown: Dick Grayson’s first foray as Robin might end up being his last.
A young Dick Grayson finds himself out on the streets of Gotham in an early field operation. One that he is confident he can complete on his own even with Batman barking orders in his ear. After Bruce intervenes, their cold ride home culminates in an argument about Dick being ready with Alfred having his opinion dismissed. After school the next day, Alfred picks Dick up and tells him that Bruce has made a decision. A decision that Dick will rebel against by doing something reckless.
Batman goes out that night with the idea that there was more to the potential robbery Dick foiled than meets the eye. He tracks the released robbers into the sewers with Robin following behind him. Unfortunately, he gets lost and finds himself face to face with Killer Croc. An encounter that leaves Batman injured and furious at Robin. In the aftermath, Dick learns of a personal betrayal and Croc remembers another encounter with Dick Grayson.
The Story: Lemire crafts an intricate and personal story for Dick. Putting the story in his perspective is a great narrative choice and gives an excellent look at his dynamic with Bruce and how troubling it can be under the surface. The story has great dialogue throughout and the mystery is perfectly executed. A deep and interesting story with awesome characterization and emotion.
The Art: Nguyen delivers some impressive and beautifully done art throughout the issue. The art gives great emotional weight to the story and the style is perfect.
