The Rundown: Robin learns the backstories of his fellow competitors.
The story begins on Lazarus Island and takes place directly after Robin #6. Robin uses a gift from Dick Grayson to access Batman’s database. He then looks into the competitors of the Lazarus tournament. In Moscow, in the recent past, Flatline’s history is shown in great detail. Also, a segment of Ravager’s story is told. All 24 competitor are named, and in less detail, snapshots of several people are listed. Afterwards, Robin makes an interesting decision. In the Epilogue, Ras Al Ghul is confronted by someone from his past.
The Story: I was pleasantly surprised by the tone this edition takes. There is a dark and serious nature to this narrative that is extremely compelling. While Damian Wayne’s battle with his inner demons is always interesting, it’s nice that this chapter has a different focus. I appreciate learning about the other competitors on the island, and the time taken to explore the lives of Flatline and Ravager. I found this story interesting, and I look forward to more content involving this member of the Bat family.
The Art: This good-looking issue uses a detailed and modern styling with bold color work. The illustrations heavily features expression and form allowing the reader to visually connect with the character’s emotions and activity. I found myself completely immersed in the world of the tale.
