The Rundown: A home invasion reveals a powerful weapon in the wrong hands and a couple discovers a familiar piece of weaponry at the scene of a past tragedy.
A couple in California are the victims of a vicious home invasion that leaves everyone dead, but not before the invaders get what they were after. What they were after was a knife that has a dark and interesting history along with abilities that make it wielder incredibly powerful. Unfortunately, one of them is still alive but in no shape to talk to the police when they arrive. However, he does leave a possible clue behind.
In the present, the Marshall’s make a trip to Brody Island Maine for vacation. They take a tour of their new vacation home and learn about an incident that happened on the island a year earlier as well as the threat of a shark in the waters off the island. When Mr. Marshall runs afoul of some local bikers, he barely escapes with his life. The next day, the couple travels to the spot where Marshall jumped in and discover something beneath the waves. Something powerful and supernatural.
The Story: I love the premise of this story and how it connects to Joe Hill’s Basketful of Heads. The plot is compelling and engaging. The characters are interesting in both their personalities and secrets. The mystery is intriguing and this issue caught me in the first few pages. I cannot wait to see how this story unfolds and what twists and turns it takes.
The Art: Fowler delivers some beautiful art throughout this issue. There is great detail in the characters as well as the backgrounds and environments. A great looking first issue.
