Sonja looks to her past to take care of a threat not coming from the emperor, but from somewhere a lot closer.
With his supplies and gold stolen by Sonja’s raiders, the emperor is a tough spot. The earliest he will be able to secure supplies will be in two weeks, but that means waiting while the people around him talk about his failure.
In her past Sonja remembers being tasked with bringing back alive a rogue general. With a force of almost fifty men, she is confident she can deliver. Unfortunately, the Domo offers the men increasingly more to both abandon Sonja or denounce her plan. A lesson is loyalty Sonja will need to remember in the present.
With Sonja in possession of the emperor’s gold and arms, former rivals come forward to swear allegiance to her for a share of the treasure. When Sonja rejects their help in favor of a small band of old warrior women, the commander leaves and makes a predictable and ultimately fatal decision.
This is a sublimely clever and entertaining issue. Mark Russell nails the characters, the dialogue, the plot and the satisfying conclusion. The story is compelling and the lesson that is being laid out is fun to follow and see unfold.
Mirko Colak and Bob Q deliver some fantastic art in this issue and the action and characters looked great.
