Sonja is traveling alone, hoping for a sense of normalcy to return to her life. That hope is dashed when she is unseated from her horse by a troll. When she rises to confront the creature, the Troll apologizes and tells her about how he has changed since the last time they encountered one another. He also tells her that there is a town close by. When she enters the town, it is busy and the locals are not happy about it.
After getting some drinks at the local pub, Sonja inquires about why the town is so busy. The barkeep tells her about the limited resources that the town has and the fact that with the Troll letting everyone across the bridge to the town, their resources are being used up. Sonja decides to take the unusual step of confronting the Troll again in order to get the creature to live up to its purpose.
This is an interesting and challenging story to tell in this issue. On the one hand, there is the story of the Troll trying to find redemption from its past. On the other hand, you have Sonja deciding that the Troll’s emotional evolution is causing more harm than good. Both sides have valid arguments and the conflict that follows casts neither in the role of the villain per se. It’s an interesting story Chu and Burnham tell in this issue and it elevated the character in my opinion.
Jonathan Lau draws Sonja well and I liked all of the details in the Troll as well as the background details of the forest. There is some really good art in this issue and it helps to create an immersive story.
