The Rundown: The legacy of Kulan Gath and his power will travel across time after Sonja ends the wizards reign.
In the aftermath of the final confrontation between Red Sonja and Kulan Gath, the warrior takes the source of the necromancer’s power and proceeds to dispose of it. Unfortunately, that kind of power doesn’t stay lost for long.
When the incarnation of Death discovers that the amulet of Kulan Gath has resurfaced, she proceeds to visit a cadre of different dark warriors to persuade them to take the power she cannot wield including Evil Ernie, Jade and Purgatori. When each warrior descends on the scene to claim the amulet and its power, warriors trying to stop them intervene and the confrontation ripples backwards in time back to Sonja herself.
The Story: There is a lot going on in this first issue and having Sonja as the through line makes it work. The plot moves really well and the different characters and their agendas are interesting to see unfold. Burnham is building an entertaining world with these characters and this story and the fact that the plot moves backwards in time to bring Sonja into it makes it more entertaining. I want to see where this story goes next and hopefully, there will be more Sonja in it.
The Art: Jonathan Lau delivers some beautiful art in this first issue. Every character looks amazing and I enjoy the redesign on Sonja. The action looks great and there are some great dramatic panels that showcase the power of the players involved.
