The Rundown: Rubin reminisces over his adventures with his young companion as they explore a spice market. The lamb based dish Raan is presented through the tale of Naeem, a cook in Old Dehli.
Trapped in a compromising situation, Rubin waxes sentimental. He then remembers a time when he and Mo explored a spice market in Old Dehli, and the process of making Raan is described. During this time, the two men’s philosophical differences cause an argument. Meanwhile, the story of Naeem is also explored. Finally, as his Naeem’s relationship with Rubin becomes clear to Mo, the latter expresses his horror while a group of dangerous men approach the scene.
The Story: Ram V creates a unique prose that has the ability to capture the heart of the reader. Even though Rubin’s nature is complex and terrifying, I am still drawn to his wildly interesting perspective. “People are the single most beautiful, delicious and flavorful things I’ve ever encountered…” is such a powerful, disturbing, and gorgeous description of humankind. I feel that the stories of Rubin’s victims as well as his thoughts regarding Mo serve the purpose of not only examining the psyche of the everyday person, but to highlight what makes them unique and unforgettable. Overall, I felt this was a wonderfully crafted narrative that makes me excited for the next installment.
The Art: The illustration uses a traditional drawing style highlighted by a watercolor inspired palette. There is a dream like quality to the design that works very well with the story. I found myself visually stimulated by the images allowing me to build a deeper connection with the tale.
