The Rundown: A man made pandemic ravages the world and apes are being blamed for it by extremists.
An experiment to look for a cure to a problem plaguing humanity turns into a plague that threatens humanity. Unfortunately, the experimentation on apes not only fails to find a cure, but changes something within the creatures themselves. Something an extremist group has dedicated itself to destroying along with any human that protects them.
As humans deal with the reality of the viral threat looming over them, small pockets of humans attempt to protect the apes that might have the cure. Humans who will find themselves battling extremists as well as the apes protecting themselves from humanity.
The Story: Walker dives back into the world of Planet of the Apes with a great first issue that lays the foundation of what’s to come by showing the events that have led to the simmering violence against apes by the human survivors. There is great dialogue throughout the issue and some great world building that immerses the reader into the events and the characters introduced within it. I love the growing tension throughout the issue and look forward to seeing what comes next.
The Art: Wachter crafts some beautiful art in the issue. The visuals are detailed, dynamic and visually thrilling. The imagery captures both the tension of the story and the emotion of the characters brilliantly.
