The Rundown: Both River and Forge enter a dangerous world to rescue Echo from a nightmare.
River makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Maya. A sacrifice that will bring him to the creature that has been part of his life since the tragedy that altered it. Inside Maya’s mind, events start to make her question if everything she’s experiencing is even real. At the same time, Forge enters the fray and takes on the Adversary as well in an attempt to save both Maya and River. Forge decides to hold off the Adversary while River tries to bring Maya out of her dream.
Remembering who she is and the legacy of her ancestors, Maya fights to break free from the illusion she’s trapped in. When she does, she decides to give the Adversary a taste of his own medicine. In the aftermath of the battle, Maya discovers what River did to help her. But does she have the power within her to help bring him back?
The Story: Roanhorse brings this story to a beautiful conclusion with wonderful storytelling and a great action. The plotting is great and does a wonderful job of both empowering the character and showing the reader why she is powerful both in physical power and in spirit. The story has some great character moments and makes me interested in seeing more of Maya in the future.
The Art: Maresca delivers some awesome visuals filled with beautiful detail and energy. There was some great visually thrilling moments to be found on every page.
