Pearl #3
DC Comics/Jinxworld
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Michael Gaydos
Letters by Joshua Reed
Ms. Endo returns to the Sugar Shack after having her vacation ruined by an incident in her club. As she and her brother discuss the event and who is behind it, the reader sees the events play out when Pearl goes to the club to fulfill her mission to kill Rick. Pearl finds herself unable to kill the young man and her best friend is there to witness everything. When a mystery assassin decides to finish the job for her, Pearl decides to teach him a lesson with a well-placed bullet to the hand.
As Pearl makes a decision that could cost her everything she holds dear, including her life, Miike reflects on how Pearl came to work for him and if he made a mistake taking her on. The death of Pearl’s mother factors into the story as well and there is an interesting and short interlude that showcases the history of the assassin as well.
The third issue of this series is pretty straightforward in its storytelling. There isn’t a lot of dialogue in it, but there are some really interesting development and history moments for the characters. It helps to flesh out Pearl as a person and even gives the reader a sense that there is more to Miike.
Beyond the story, this issue was visually stunning. The art was beautiful and daring with the composition of the panels and the way the art moved the story along. There are sequences in the book that help to tell the story without words because Gaydos does great work with facial expressions. Definitely an interesting issue that seems to be moving towards something significant for the characters.
