The Rundown: Pearl is starting to get a reputation in San Francisco, but it might not be enough to keep her out of trouble.
There’s a rumor in the city of a Yakuza enforcer keeping their people in line and that enforcer is Pearl Tanaka. Something the Endo twins learn the hard way when their business goes up in flames after repeated warnings from the organization. When the agent in charge of the investigation decides to pay Pearl a visit, the two discuss what happened.
Pearl gets a call from her father who has some bad news about the laid back life she seems to be living in her tattoo parlor. Unfortunately, their conversation gets cut short by a violent hit on her business and an assassin wanting her dead.
The Story: As a fan of Pearl’s adventures, Bendis brings the reader back into her world with a great blend of violence, charm, romance and humor. The tone of the story works really well with the characters and it is fun seeing them commiserate with each other. I like that the stakes for Pearl continue to change and evolve as she does and the issue ends on a great cliffhanger that immediately makes me curious for what comes next.
The Art: Gaydos delivers some stunningly beautiful art on every page of the issue. There are so many great visual moments to be found that I cannot choose just one that caught my eye.
