In a move that shouldn’t be seen by anyone as surprising, Patty Jenkins will return to helm the anticipated sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, Wonder Woman.

The first Wonder Woman movie, which has grossed more than $800 million dollars worldwide, has been one of the biggest hits for Warner Brothers recently and the biggest one for their DC universe of films so far. So it should have been a no brainer that director Patty Jenkins would return to helm the sequel. Not quite actually.

In what seems to be lengthy negotiations behind the scenes, not only is Patty Jenkins back to produce, co-write and direct the planned 2019 sequel, but the new arrangement will reportedly make Jenkins the highest paid female directors in history. Jenkins was initially paid $1 million dollars to direct the original film. According to sources, Jenkins will receive directing and writing fees in the high seven figures (possibly between $7 and $9 million dollars) and will receive a  significant bonus on the back-end if the sequel film is as successful as the first.

With both the film and the director shattering box office records and glass ceilings across the board, could this be the harbinger of a new era for female directors in Hollywood? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Wonder Woman sequel, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot is scheduled for release December 13, 2019.
