The 2009 comedy Zombieland was a sleeper hit for Sony when it was released and there has been speculation that a sequel was coming. There’s even been rumors that a sequel was already filmed.
Rumors and innuendo aside, Deadline is reporting that not only is there going to be a sequel to Zombieland, but that the original cast is on returning along with the original films director Ruben Fleischer. Fleischer’s next film is the upcoming Sony film Venom, based on the Marvel Comics character.
According to the Deadline article, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.
The original cast of Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin have all signed on for the sequel which will be directed by Fleischer from a screenplay by original Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese who will come on as executive producers.
Production is set to begin in January 2019 with an October 2019 release date.
