The Rundown: Bridgette goes looking for someone to take on Arthur while the king finds his rule challenged.
Duncan, Gran and Rose find themselves facing a powerful entity that yearns to be freed. Unfortunately, enlisting his help proves to be a dead end. At the same time, Arthur prepares for battle while Merlin remembers what the last battle in that location cost him. Unable to persuade Arthur to take another path, his forces run into battle. A battle that will force him to take on his supposed rival in the middle of the field.
With the scraps of a plan in place, Duncan, Bridgette and Rose work on a way to stop the two Arthur’s. With his Arthur taking a lot of damage on the field, Merlin decides to use a clever distraction to clear the armies from the field and allow him to get to his lord. Unfortunately, his distraction attracts another Arthur who claims to be the true king. At the same time, Duncan and company enlist another legend to take on the Arthurs. One who has a problem with bad kings.
The Story: I continue to be blown away by this series and Gillen’s masterful tone in storytelling. I love the dark humor throughout the plot as well as just how big and unpredictable the story continues to get. There’s no way of knowing where this story will go next and that is one of the things that makes it so compelling. It’s a unique and richly engaging story that is a blast to read.
The Art: Dan Mora is solidifying his place as one of my favorite artists with the brilliant, beautiful and intense tone of the art in this issue. I love every detail throughout and Bonvillain’s use of color makes all of the panels and pages pop.
