The Rundown: The Well of Souls reopens and new Amazons issue forth.
Nubia’s origin in Themyscira is shown. In the present, she has a convo with two trusted Amazons. Later, Nubia welcomes new sisters from the Well of Souls. Then, the women are given a series of tests. Afterwards, a welcoming celebration is had for the new Amazons. There Nubia and several of her warriors discuss the current events. Finally, later that night, Penelope has a prophetic dream regarding the island.
The Story: Williams does a great job with setting up the plotline in the first issue of this series. I’m always excited to learn more Themysciran lore and I appreciate all the new information given regarding how Amazons are received onto the island. I also like that this issue takes the time to explain Nubia’s beginning with the Amazons and alludes to a special connection with Diana. I’m very interested in this iteration of Nubia and can’t wait to find out more of her story.
The Art: The artwork in this issue is beautiful and each panel feels like a painting. I am impressed with the way artists convey a variety of body shapes, features, and hair textures. Each of the Amazons have distinct looks and represent a multitude of ethnicities. Even in the panels that feature multiple women, their differences are highlighted. This type of representation is important as young girls who read this series will be able to see themselves and the women in their lives in the characters.
