The Rundown: The final showdown between Nubia and Medusa occurs.
At Doom’s Doorway, Nubia battles an angry and violent Medusa. When it appears that Medusa has gained the upper hand, something unusual occurs. Then, Nubia uses her staff to connect with her enemy. Afterwards, the two find themselves above the Doorway. After an unexpected occurrence, Nubia returns to the palace with Medusa and Andromeda.
Later, Nubia goes to the Temple of the Goddesses and converse with them. After which she checks in on a recovering Andromeda and the two have a healing conversation. Then Nubia discusses her new weapon with Io. Finally, someone important makes a surprising return to the island.
The Story: In the penultimate chapter of this series, Williams continues her treatise on the importance of sisterhood and the power of compassion. Nubia’s greatest strength is in her empathy and the important choices she makes regarding one of her greatest enemies shows a depth of character that is both refreshing and awe inspiring. I applaud Williams for her brilliant reimagining of Nubia, and I am excited to find out what’s next in store for this character and her Amazonian sisters.
The Art: Just as in the previous episodes, this visually appealing issue is filled with intense and engaging action scenes. The modern art style and detailed drawings are incredibly transportive. There is an emotional tone in the story that is captured by the special attention paid to character expression and form and stands out in certain panels in a manner that is absolutely breathtaking.
