The Rundown: Val fights to escape Blacktop Bill, but not everyone in her party will make it out.
More of the past is revealed as Val recalls the early days of the darkness and how it affected her and Emory. As the two kids watch news reports highlighting the changes infecting people and animals, they find themselves dealing with that danger close to home when calls from their basement reveal something horrifying that will change their lives.
Back in the present, Val and the others are running from Blacktop Bill and his gang, but the killer has a few tricks up his sleeves. Not to be caught unaware herself, Val uses some tricks she’s gathered to keep the gang from overtaking them, but it will take a sacrifice to give them any chance of escape. A sacrifice that might have held the key to changing the world.
The Story: Tense and full of action, Snyder continues to ramp things up in this series. Val continues to be an intriguing and entertaining character and the rest of the supporting cast is great as well. The world of this story continues to grow and evolve in ways that engage me as a reader and taking the time to show the effects of the darkness on people as well as how it affects Val and Emory’s world is a brilliant narrative touch. I love the places this series goes both thematically and personally and cannot wait to see where it goes next.
The Art: Daniel delivers more stunning and beautifully detailed art throughout this issue. The wonderful contrast between the human moments and the moments of high action and horror are breath-taking.
