The Rundown: Nightwing goes on a rescue mission after Dick Grayson’s home is targeted by enemies.
After receiving an alarming message from Barbara, Dick changes into his Nightwing uniform and rushes home. Once there, he discovers something alarming. After a violent confrontation, he calls on Oracle to lend her aide. He then goes after a group of henchmen in an attempt to liberate a dear friend. Later he is joined by Batgirl and the two engage in battle. Afterwards, they share a moment.
The Story: Taylor and Redondo create a thrilling short tale that may serve as an entry point to new readers. Dick learns a hard lesson about Bludhaven’s underworld, and it will be interesting to see how he handles notoriety outside of his role as Nightwing. His first test was difficult for me as a reader. I found myself screaming at the comic book. I am attached to all things related to this iteration of the character, and I felt as upset as Nightwing with the actions of his enemies.
I must also state that the plotline of this story is relatively simple, and this chapter could easily be considered a one-shot adventure. The true beauty of this story lies in its visuals which are elaborated upon in the next section. Still, this episode sets up an interesting premise and I look forward to more tales regarding Dick Grayson and those that are important to his life.
The Art: Redondo and Lucas create a masterpiece in visual storytelling with this issue. The entire comic is one continuous scene that follows Nightwing’s journey through Bludhaven. I am impressed with the way this was handled. The multiple drawings of the protagonist in multiple poses as the scene shifts and changes feels fresh and different. It is eye appealing in the same way as an action scene shot in one continuous take. I can’t say enough good thing about this ambitious project. It was perfectly done.
