The Rundown: Inman gets closer to the truth and will discover the dark power of the ghoul.
As Inman continues his conversation with Merritt, the two are interrupted by Dr. Skeen who has learned that Inman has not been honest about his motives for being at the hospital. When Merritt tries to tell Inman that the doctor is in fact the evil that he has been talking about, the group is interrupted by one of the security guards and Inman’s son Orson. After hearing what his son found in the basement of the hospital, Skeen calls their bluff with an explanation. An explanation that puts Inman in a difficult situation.
In the film, Johnny and Alex go to see someone who might have answers about the ghoul. A desperate Alex implores the professor for help, and she reluctantly agrees. After learning the dark history of the ghoul and what the professor lost in her attempts to find it, the pair learn of an ancient conspiracy as well as a possible glimmer of hope that they might be able to fight the ghoul itself. When Inman returns to the facility to get the rest of the film, he finally sees what Merritt fears.
The Story: Snyder ramps up the tension in both parts of the story and I was riveted to each moment. The reality of Inman’s relationship with his son as well as what he has been neglecting is beautifully done. The danger the pair face with Skeen is palpable and the story within the story is highly engaging. I love the cinematic quality of the other story and it feels like seeing a classic horror film while also knowing the stakes of the story. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
The Art: Francavilla delivers some beautiful visuals on every page of this issue. Not only are the scenes interesting and scary at times, but there are subtle background images that enhance the dark nature of the story.
