The Rundown: The truth of Newburn’s past is revealed as he looks to Emily for help.
Easton Newburn is a good cop in a corrupt system and sustains himself with solving the mysteries that he finds despite the environment he works in. His family life has informed his choices and his relationship with his parents will be a big part in his decision making.
When his investigation into a potential mob war leads to an attack on his family, Newburn turns the corner and does something he knows he can never come back from. Something he finally reveals to Emily as he prepares for the next part of his plan.
The Story: Zdarsky does a fantastic job of crafting the back story of Newburn and making it compelling and entertaining. The story adds more layers and motivation to the character and gives the reader an insight into who is and why he is the way that he is. I enjoyed the pacing and rising tension of the story a lot and cannot wait to see how Newburn and Emily weather what’s coming for them.
The Art: Phillips continues to create some beautifully detailed and dynamic art in the issue. The gritty, noir tone of the story continues to be elevated by the fantastic art.
