The Rundown: An unconventional detective is brought in to solve a unique murder.
In a high rise apartment, a mysterious man gets a call. At a crime scene in New York, the man known as Newburn is called in to investigate. His relationship with the detectives on the scene indicates that he is no ordinary consultant. After talking to the only witnesses to the crime scene and discovering who the victim is and who he was connected to, Newburn gets to work.
After tracking the perpetrator through the area, he finds himself at the establishment of someone who knows exactly who he is and who he works for. Someone who knows that Newburn isn’t to be touched. After discovering the who the perpetrator is and where to find him, Newburn uses some unusual methods to get a confession before going to visit someone who knows more about the crime than she revealed.
The Story: This is a brilliantly crafted, gritty noir drama that grabbed my attention from the first few pages. There are some interesting and unexpected elements throughout and I was impressed with both the writing and how the plot unfolded. The twist in circumstances is well done and I am interested in seeing just how deep this story goes from here.
The Art: Phillips delivers some great art with an awesome minimalist style that works perfectly with the noir themes of the story.
