The Rundown: The New Mutants are back and headed to deep space to retrieve one of their own.
The New Mutants are reborn on Krakoa and each one of them is getting used to their surroundings and basking in the wonder of a new mutant homeland.
The only thing that’s missing is Cannonball.
In a bid to get him back from inside the Shi’ar empire, the New Mutants hitch a ride with the Starjammers to get him back. After spending days on the ship and not getting along well with the crew, they arrive at a space station and are told to stay back.
Not listening to Corsair’s advice exposes the true nature of the Starjammer’s mission as well as puts them on the wrong end of some Shi’ar weapons.
The Story: This was a fun issue that took a lighter tone than other stories in this mutant rebirth storyline. Brisson and Hickman play up the interpersonal relationships between the mutants really well and you get a sense of the history these characters have with each other. The Starjammers are done perfectly and there is always the sense in the scenes with the mutants that they could either embrace them or throw them out an airlock.
The Art: Rod Reis has a distinctly beautiful visual style and it is showcased best in the first few pages with Rahne and the rest of the mutants exploring the island.
