Today is the first New Comic Book Day with no new comics coming from publishers, but many of the comics that have been released in the last few months have either wrapped up storylines or begun new ones and it’s the perfect time to dive into some titles that are new to you.
DC Comics
Writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo are hard at work on the next chapter of their epic DC Comics event Dark Nights: Death Metal, but if you haven’t had the chance to check out the event that started it all, you can catch up by picking up Dark Nights: Metal from the prolific duo. The story is epic in scale and scope and touches on all corners of the DC Universe while introducing one of the Justice League and Batman’s worst nightmares: an army of evil Batmen from across the Dark Multiverse. The origins of the evil Dark Knights are explored as well with each one getting its own one-shot.
Marvel Comics
Writer Jason Aaron and artist Russell Dauterman bring the Marvel universe together for an epic battle to save Midgard in War Of The Realms. The Dark Elf Malekith has systematically taken over all of the realms including Asgard, Alfheim, Heven, Jotunheim, Muspelheim, Niffleheim, Nidavellir, Svartalfheim and Vanaheim. Now his eye is fixed on Midgard and Malekith will unleash a massive invasion of the Earth that will require heroes from the Avengers to the Punisher to turn back the tide of destruction sweeping the planet.
Writer Jonathan Hickman and artists Pepe Larraz and R.B. Silva change everything you know about Marvel’s mutants, their history and their future with this storyline. Filled with revelations and deeper mysteries, the story forges a new reality for mutantkind including the creation of a mutant homeland and the end of mutants hiding in fear from humans. There is a new dream for mutants and it is laid out in this story. House of X/ Powers of X is epic in scale , story and imagination.
BOOM! Studios
Once & Future is an epic tale from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Dan Mora. When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead to gain power, ex-monster hunter Bridgette McGuire escapes her retirement home and pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat. This is an ongoing series, but this epic first arc of the series will introduce you to a new and engaging cast of characters set in a world filled with action and adventure.
Dark Horse Comics
No One Left To Fight is an epic series for fans of big anime style action like Dragonball. Created by writer Aubrey Sitterson and artist Fico Ossio, No One Left To Fight tells the story of a trio of adventurers who find life has changed in the time after their final epic showdown. Adulthood becomes an all new adventure as the friends are forced to reconcile their pasts including their regrets and resentments.
The Girl in the Bay is a brilliant and engaging story that spans time as seventeen year old Kathy Sartori is brutally murdered in the year 1969 only to emerge from the water she was dumped in alive and well fifty years later. To make matters stranger, another Kathy has lived her life for the last five decades and the man who murdered her back in 1969 comes looking to finish the job. It’s a tale filled with mysticism, magic and heart from writer J.M DeMatteis and artist Corin Howell.

Writer Kieron Gillen makes the list again along with artist Stephanie Hans for their epic series Die. When a group of friends meet to play a fantasy role-playing game, they disappear. When they return, one of their party is missing. Now in their 40’s, the friends will be drawn together again and plunged back into the fantasy world they barely escaped the first time and this time there may be no going back. What makes the story unique and entertaining is the choices these friends made the first time they were in the world of Die have consequences that change the game fundamentally for all of them.
The Sangerye family are the greatest monster hunters of all time and are known for being able to heal the souls of those infected by hatred. Unfortunately, a tragedy kills many of them and the rest are divided by their history of helping the infected and wanting to kill them before they hurt others. To make matters worse, a new breed of creature has invaded the Earth and is cutting a swath of destruction throughout Harlem in the series Bitter Root from writers Chuck Brown and David F. Walker with art from Sanford Greene.
