Another piece of the puzzle is uncovered and another back story revealed about a member of the new Challengers of the Unknown in this new issue. As the Challengers fight their way through a savage land filled with vikings and dinosaurs, the history of Bethany is revealed and her story is fascinating. After learning about Krunch in the last issue, there was a sense that the team’s stories would be told throughout the next few issues and I’m glad Bethany was chosen for this one. She has a completely different story that comes with its own set of mysteries.
Bethany’s story is intercut with the teams attempt to get the relic they have been sent to retrieve, but the forces aligned against them have the advantage of knowing more about their mission and the power they seek than the Challengers themselves. Something that becomes apparent when the team finds themselves at the mercy of forces they can’t explain and it takes Bethany doing something drastic to try to get the team back to Challengers Mountain before their time runs out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this issue on every level. Snyder and Gillespie do a great job of making these characters that seemingly were chosen at random, interesting in their roots. Learning about the unique relationship Bethany has with death makes her actions in the issue have an interesting resonance that makes me want to know more about her personally. There is some great dialogue in this issue and the team seems to be coming together in a really organic way.
The art is amazing. It is brilliantly detailed and imaginative. I loved both the close-ups character expressions and the action scenes were great. The art is enhanced and elevated by both the inks and colors used. Everything from the first page to the last panel is vibrant and eye-catching. I can’t wait to see what happens next for this team.
