The Rundown: Naomi’s search for a friend will force her to question whether she’s ready to be a superhero.
Naomi’s parents are having a battle of their own as her mother is exasperated by the secrets her husband is keeping, where Naomi is and why he’s been pushing her so hard. Their argument is interrupted by the arrival of Hawkgirl who is looking for Naomi herself. At the same time, Naomi and Cyborg battle against a giant creature trying to enter our world.
In the aftermath, Naomi unleashed her power to drive the creature back and discovers a limit to her abilities while Hawkgirl and Cyborg decide to send her home to continue the healing process, bit physically and with her relationship with her father. As she tries to return to her normal life, Naomi will find herself drawn back into action when a missing friend returns.
The Story: Bendis and Walker do an awesome job of moving Naomi’s story forward both as she evolves as a hero and also how her interpersonal relationships grow and change as well. The story has some great action moments within it, but it shines when it focuses on Naomi and her personal struggles. I liked seeing how she relates to Cyborg and Hawkgirl a lot and it showcases how interesting a character she is.
The Art: Campbell delivers some beautifully crafted art on every page of the issue. The style is perfect for the character and delivers some dynamic action and wonderful character details.
