The Rundown: In a dark future, the former king of Atlantis deals with a changed world.
A global catastrophe caused the heroes of Earth to leave the planet leaving the drowned world to its new ruler Namor. With dwindling human settlements on the surface, Namor rules the planet and Atlantis thrives.
Years later, Namor is no longer on the throne and attempting to help the remaining humans with the ones beneath the sea being led by Steve Rogers and the ones on the surface led by Luke Cage. Unfortunately, the prosperity of Atlantis is starving humanity and the animosity will lead to increasing levels of violence.
The Story: Cantwell crafts an interesting and engaging story in this first issue. There are some intriguing and complicated themes throughout and those complications lead to some interesting drama especially the moments between Namor and Steve as well as Namor and Luke Cage. The story also dives deeper into the character of Namor and how he has evolved in the face of getting everything he ever wanted. It will be interesting to see how this series evolves as well.
The Art: Ferry delivers some impressive and visually engaging visuals throughout the issue and I love not only the atmosphere of the story, but also the visuals of an aging Steve and Luke.
