Miles and Rhino reluctantly agree to work together to solve the mystery of the missing people. Unfortunately, with the sun coming up, Miles has to get back to his life as a student. A life that is getting more complicated because of his proximity to one of the missing people and his inability to balance his life as Spider-Man and the demands of being a student.
When Miles finally finds a way to get away, he and Rhino find clues that lead them to Tombstone and a group of well-armed thugs. Both Miles and Rhino are unaware of the scope of this conspiracy, but a familiar face decides to lend a hand.
Miles is still struggling to get some balance in his life and that makes for some great drama. Saladin Ahmed does a great job of showing the real struggles someone Miles’ age would face in this situation. It’s one of those things that gets glossed over in superhero comics, but the time demands of a life as a student are just as interesting as swinging through the city looking for bad guys. It adds more humanity to Miles when we see him dealing with life and the consequences of his responsibilities. I liked seeing Miles trying to get away from the Vice Principal and failing along with getting called out for yawning in class. Those human moments make Miles endearing as a character.
Beyond that, this was just a fun issue.
Teaming up Miles and Rhino is both fun and awkward to witness. Their dynamic is so different from Peter’s relationship with him that there are moments when you think they could be friends. The fact that Rhino gets to playfully tease Miles about his age is fun to see as well.
The art by Javier Garron is stunning. Both the characters and backgrounds look great and there are some beautiful action scenes in this issue, especially Rhino and Miles vs Tombstone. Even the final reveal on the last page looked great both in composition and execution.
