In Abel’s recent past, his father receives a package for the boy. Inside it is a brand new bike and when Abel gushes over the gift that he believes came from the mother who abandoned him and his father, his dad flies into a rage and decides to take it out on the gift.
In the present, Abel is unable to control his powers and as the carnival workers get closer, the rage building inside him continues to grow. It takes the words of the boss and Fox to calm him enough to hold back the destruction he was about to unleash. It turns out that the boss of this traveling circus is Magdalena herself and Abel is desperate to find a way to remove the force inside him. Convinced that he needs her help, he offers to work off his debt to the carnival and appears to start making friends.
Back at the old man’s home, he communicates with Magdalena about the boy and what she can do to help him. As he’s cleaning his area, a gust of wind sweeps in and reveals an unexpected visitor.
This issue continues an already interesting and engaging narrative. I continue to be interested in Abel’s story, the story of his world and the circumstances that drive him on this quest. At the same time, Skottie Young wrings some deep emotional tension throughout this story as well with the comparisons and contrasts between Abel and his father.
I love Jorge Corona’s art in this issue. There are so many beautifully detailed panels throughout and so much emotion he conveys in the character interactions.
