With filming already underway on the next Star Wars feature, there is more casting news being released.
According to multiple sources including Deadline, Doctor Who and The Crown star Matt Smith has joined the cast of Star Wars Episode IX directed by JJ Abrams.
According to the trades, Smith has been cast in a “key” role for the film, but there is no confirmation whether the Doctor Who actor will be on the side of the Resistance or the First Order. Smith has recently been nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Prince Phillip in the Netflix series The Crown and his next film will be about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe with Smith playing the title role.
Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels are also returning for the film along with unused footage of the late Carrie Fisher. Smith will be joining returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran and Adam Driver as well as Star Wars newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie.
The production is still underway with a projected December 20, 2019 release date.
