Netflix has completed its purge of the highly popular Marvel Studios series with the news that both The Punisher and Jessica Jones are done on the streaming service.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Punisher (which completed its second season on the streaming service) will not return for a third. According to a release from Netflix; “Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” the statement said.
The news comes after the recent cancellations of Marvel’s Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the first Marvel series on the service, Daredevil.
Jessica Jones has recently completed filming its third (and now final) season with Netflix stating;
“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
There is currently no release date for Jessica Jones’ final season.
While many were not surprised at the news, there are fans who still hope that these shows and the talented actors who star on them will find a new home on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service or possibly HULU after the Fox deal gives Disney a 60% stake in the streaming service.
There are currently no plans for the shows to return.
