The Rundown: Nate’s world continues to fall apart and the steps he took to create this elaborate illusion come to light in this issue.
When the discovery of a murdered member of Department X prompts the X-Men and Psylocke to investigate, Nature Girl finds out what happened using her powers. Moneta’s rash act brings out the true nature of a familiar face and her subsequent death has everyone questioning themselves and the world they live in. With the breaches continuing to filter in memories, the truth becomes harder and harder to deny.
As Nate realizes that his time is almost up, he allows the events to unfold even if they cast him in the role of the villain to his teammates. The team confront Jean and with all the cards on the table, they decide that they need to confront Nate and get answers. Unfortunately, taking on the most powerful mutant in the world isn’t going to be an easy task. Especially when he knows they’re coming.
The Story: Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler are bringing events to a head and the way they are laying the groundwork for the final confrontation with Nate is masterful. Even with Nate seemingly holding all the cards, there is an intensity and a level of suspense that keeps the reader guessing on what happens next.
The Art: Marco Failla delivers some great art in this issue and the contrast between the visual style of Nate’s flashback and the present is simple, but effective.
