In the wake of changes in the distribution and release of blockbuster films, Marvel Studios is moving forward with a sequel to Captain Marvel and they have found a director.
The first Captain Marvel film, starring Brie Larson, was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film told the story of the return to Earth of Air Force pilot Captain Carol Danvers. As she tries to piece together her past and discover the origin of her powers, she brings the warring Kree and Skrulls along with her. The film also starred Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L Jackson, Clark Gregg, Lashana Lynch and Jude Law.
The first Captain Marvel grossed over $1.128 billion dollars at the box office so a sequel was inevitable.
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has decided to bring in director Nia DaCosta to direct the sequel. The script for the sequel was written by WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell. DaCosta directed the indie film Little Woods and recently directed the remake of the Clive Barker horror film Candyman which was executive produced and co-written by Jordan Peele. Candyman was expected to be released this summer, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
