With Captain Marvel on the horizon for early next year, the first female hero introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (don’t @ me, Peggy Carter didn’t debut in the movies until 2011, after Widow was introduced in Iron Man 2) has finally found a director for her long in development solo outing.
According to an exclusive in The Hollywood Reporter, director Cate Shortland, the Australian director known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to direct Black Widow for Marvel Studios.
The studio is said to have met with over 70 directors before deciding on Shortland. Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as the secret agent and is said to have championed Shortland as director after becoming a fan of her 2012 film Lore. In the film, a young woman must lead her siblings through war torn Germany as the Allied Army rolls in.
Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Black Widow and it is being reported that the film will take place before the events of the first Avengers movie. Could this mean that we get to see what happened in Budapest and a possible Jeremy Renner/ Hawkeye cameo?
More on this story as it develops.
