Disney’s as yet unnamed streaming service is gearing up to launch late next year and today there was an announcement that will be huge for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is developing a new series of shows for the streaming service which will available at launch and feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe including Loki and Scarlet Witch. These limited series will feature actors Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen reprising their roles from the big screen. There are currently no writers attached to the shows, but featuring characters from the big screen MCU films could be potentially huge for Disney and Marvel Studios in regards to the streaming service which is set to also feature a new live action Star Wars series from MCU alum Jon Favreau.
Around 500 films from the Disney library will show up on the direct-to-consumer platform, in addition to around 7,000 episodes of Disney TV shows. The studio will also produce 4 or five exclusive original films, but the potential is huge for crossovers between the new original MCU shows on the streaming service and the upcoming slate of movies. The MCU has always been sold as being “all connected”, but the connections to other Marvel produced shows have been tenuous at best. This announcement means that Marvel Studios is making a clear connection between its big screen fare and the small screen.
